Frequently Asked Questions

The transition to secondary school means that students will enter a learning environment that is significantly different from what they were used to at primary school. We realise that means that many of the things we do will be unfamiliar to them. We help them by publishing an interactive planner to their iPads to help them understand the ways that we support them.

Q. What do I do if my child will be absent from school?

 

If the absence is due to illness, we ask that you phone the Academy on 01736 363240 

before 9am on the first and third day of absence. When your child returns, please send us a note to cover the dates of absence.

 

Appointments for doctors or dentist visits should be made outside of school time unless there is an urgent issue. If your child needs to leave the Academy for an appointment, they must go via reception to be signed out and back in again on their return. Please provide an appointment card or letter for verification.

 

Government policy means that we are unable to authorise requests for leave of absence for holidays, other than in exceptional circumstances. Please see our attendance leaflet in your pack for details.

 

Students need to arrive at the Academy in time to be in tutor rooms for 8.40am. If your child arrives after 9.00am, they must sign in at reception before going to lessons.

 

 

Q What happens if I forget to phone the school if my child is absent?

 

We have a first day calling procedure which means that if you have not informed the school that your child is going to be absent then we will phone you. This ensures that you know where your child is during the school day. It is essential that we have up to date day time telephone numbers.  If you change numbers at any time, please always inform us.

 

 

Q. What happens if my child is well enough for school but unable to do P.E.?

 

Your child will require a note stating the reason why they are unable to participate in the lesson. However, this is closely monitored and it will be challenged if a pattern appears to be emerging. 

 

 

Q. What happens if my child loses anything?

 

Lost property that is found is held in the Compass Centre. This sometimes takes a few days and so if your child loses anything we advise them to think back carefully to where they last saw the missing article – usually that is where they will find it.

 

Q. How does my child get a bus pass?

 

If your child is eligible for a bus pass it will be issued directly by County Hall. Once your child has been given a place they send the bus pass straight to your address during the summer holidays. For enquiries call school transport at Cornwall Council 0300 1234101.

 

Q. What happens if my child loses their bus pass?

 

They can obtain a temporary bus pass from the Compass Centre.  This temporary pass will only last a maximum of 5 days. You will need to apply for a new pass from Cornwall Council by calling school transport on  0300 1234101.

Q. If my child needs medication during the school day what do I do?

 

Your child should take the medicine, together with a signed letter from you stating that you give permission for us to administer the medicine, to the Compass Centre. It will then be stored safely in the First Aid room.

Q. What are the rules on picking students up from school by car?

 

If you have to pick your child up from school by car please arrange to do so after 3:30pm.  The bus bay is for our buses only between 3:00pm and 3:30pm. With almost 1000 students to dismiss from the school site, our ‘bus duty staff’ would greatly appreciate cars not obstructing the entrance, exit and turning points for our school buses. We ask this only for the safety of all our students. Thank you.

 

Q. What is the purpose of the interactive planner?

 

At the beginning of each semester our interactive planner is updated in iBooks library on every student Pad. This Planner is packed full of information and is a valuable tool to help them plan their school year and home study.

 

Q. What After School Clubs are available and how do we find out about them?

 

During normal Academy opening we have lots of different clubs during the year which will be published in our Mixx Activity booklet. These usually finish at around 4:30pm.  You can also see the school website for information. When clubs are active we run a late bus service..

 

Q. What happens if a student gets lost?

 

Lots of new students worry about this but very few actually get lost! There will always be someone who can point students in the right direction.  There is a map in the student planner to help too!
